Young men study about sexual health

Young Men StudyIn Australia while the rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are quite low there has been an increase in unsafe sexual practices especially among young people.  STIs can cause serious health problems and unwanted teen pregnancies can place considerable constraints on a young person’s life. We know that there are many things that influence the decisions young people make about having sex, using condoms, and how to have intimate relationships.  We also know that guys play a key role in when and how to practice Safe Sex.  What we don’t know so much about is what young Australian men think about sex and condoms, nor do we know much about how effective Safe Sex education is for young men.

This study hopes to gain first hand information from young men about their sexual health. The aim is to develop a body of knowledge that will assist us to design education programs that better meet the needs of young people, especially guys.

You are being asked to consider helping us with this study if you are a young Australian guy. If you think you might be interested in participating please view this information sheet and flyer.

Sex education research project

My name is Allison Macbeth and I am conducting a research project through the University of Sydney entitled "A Trans-generational study of the effects of a school-based sex education program on sexual attitudes and behaviour".

This project will conduct an on-line questionnaire of people who did most of their schooling in Australia to assess their experiences of sexual health education both in their own youth and/or how they experience it with their own children.

The aims are to learn about sexual health communication in families in Australia, to learn what characteristics affect the quality of sexual health education, to learn how different sources affect the impact of sexual health education, to understand the process of parents as sexuality educators of their children, and to see if there are any differences between age cohorts in terms of attitudes and behaviours to sexuality education.

This project will contribute to the body of knowledge around sexual health education in Australia. This will also contribute to improving public health campaigns including education and resources, leading to sexually healthier youth and thus a sexually healthier society in Australia.

To be eligible to take part in this study you must:
* be over 18 years of age, and;
* have completed most of your schooling in Australia.

If you are eligible and are interested in taking part, please go to http://www.usyd.edu.au/sexualhealth/online/surveys.shtml and follow the links.

Additionally, if you are not eligible and/or you might know someone who you think may be interested in taking part in this research, please forward this letter to them so they can help us with our study.

If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me, Allison Macbeth, at amac2799@usyd.edu.au or 0423 656 813.
